Top 3 BARRIers Hindering JC2s

In the second year of Junior College, JC2 Economics students face a great deal of stress having to consolidate their learning in JC1 as well as grasp new JC2 economic concepts. That's 2-year worth of concepts, diagrams and economically rigorous explanations to master! Furthermore, you will also need to sharpen exam-answering techniques and contextual knowledge. We hear you! Here are the 3 most common barriers stopping you from getting that 'A' in Economics exams.

1. Deciding: What to write? How to write? How much to write?

Economics is a study of how economic agents make rational decisions. As rational JC Econs students seeking to maximize our scores in the exams, aren’t we also caught in this decision making process? Under time constraint, making choices on what and how much to write to ensure best performance is a constant internal struggle. That is when planning and writing fast are all the more important!!

2. Awareness of Real World Contexts

Many students who have improved in their grades reach a plateau due to this. As CSQ and essay questions are always based on real world context, it becomes challenging for students who are weak in this area to apply concepts to the given context. Contextual knowledge also allows students to do a self-check on the appropriateness of their answers. Sounds hard? Fear not, it is really not that hard with proper guidance.

3. Writing the Evaluation Paragraph

Evaluation may only account for 2 to 3 marks of a higher order thinking (HOT) question in CSQ and 5 marks for an Essay but it can propel a level 2 answer to a level 3. Many students face the difficulty of churning up evaluation points OR giving overly generic evaluation tied to specific policies, hence failing to achieve high evaluation marks. This is because they don’t have a set of evaluation yardsticks to rely on. While this set of yardsticks would be applicable in every question, students would still need to select the most important ones according to the context of the question.
